PART 2: THE $640,000 TRANSACTION THAT EXPOSED MY EX-HUSBAND

Across town, my phone lit up with a notification that made my father stop drinking his coffee.
TRANSACTION DECLINED: $640,000.
Merchant: The Meridian Room.
Cardholder: Harper Bell.
I stared at the screen, unable to believe what I was seeing.
“Six hundred and forty thousand dollars?” I whispered.

My father leaned forward, studied the notification, and gave a small, humorless smile.
“So,” he said quietly, “he finally showed us what he was planning.”
Before I could ask what he meant, my phone rang.
Landon.
I almost ignored it, but Dad shook his head.
“Answer it. Put him on speaker.”

The moment I accepted the call, Landon’s furious voice exploded through the kitchen.
“Harper! What the hell did you do to my card?”
I glanced at my father.
“Your card?” I repeated calmly.
“Yes, my card! I’m sitting in the middle of an important celebration, and the manager just told me my payment was declined!”

“Which card, Landon?”
“The black one! The business card!”
I looked down at the card lying beside my coffee.
“Oh. You mean my company card?”
There was a brief silence.
Then he laughed bitterly.
“Don’t start this nonsense. We were married for twelve years. Everything we built belongs to both of us.”

“Actually,” I replied, “the judge explained our financial settlement this afternoon. You signed the papers, remember?”
His breathing changed.
“Unlock it, Harper. Right now.”
“No.”
One word.
After twelve years of apologizing, compromising, and making myself smaller to keep him happy, that single word felt strangely wonderful.
In the background, I heard Tessa complaining.
“Landon, what’s taking so long? Tell her to stop being pathetic!”
Then Landon lowered his voice.
“Listen carefully. If you embarrass me tonight, you’ll regret it.”
My father reached across the table and gently took the phone.
“Landon,” he said.
Silence.
“Martin?” Landon sounded startled.
“Yes. And before you make another threat against my daughter, you should know something.”
“What?”
“Every word of this conversation is being recorded.”
Landon immediately disconnected.
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
Then Dad opened his laptop.
“Harper, there’s something I haven’t told you.”
My stomach tightened.
“About Landon?”
He nodded.
“Three weeks ago, I noticed unusual activity involving your company accounts. I didn’t say anything because I needed evidence.”
My heart began pounding.
“What kind of activity?”
Dad turned the screen toward me.
A spreadsheet filled the display.
Transactions.
Transfers.
Account numbers.
And one name that appeared repeatedly.
Tessa Blake.
I stared at it.
“She was receiving money from my company?”
“Not directly,” Dad explained. “Landon routed payments through a consulting business registered six months ago.”
“How much?”
My father hesitated.
That frightened me more than anything.
“Dad. How much?”
“Just over $1.8 million.”
The room seemed to tilt.
I gripped the edge of the table.
For years, I had worked fourteen-hour days building Bellstone Holdings. I had sacrificed vacations, holidays, and weekends to make my company successful.
And while I was doing that, my husband had apparently been stealing from it.
“To pay for her?” I whispered.
“Among other things.”
Dad clicked another document.
A luxury apartment lease.
A European vacation.
Designer purchases.
And several transfers to an account I had never seen before.
I recognized the address on the apartment lease immediately.
It was the condo where Landon had been taking Tessa.
I covered my mouth.
“He told me that was an investment property.”
Dad’s expression softened.
“I know, sweetheart.”
Then he opened another file.
“But the missing money isn’t the worst part.”
Before he could explain, my phone rang again.
This time, the caller ID showed The Meridian Room.
I answered.
“Ms. Bell?” a nervous male voice asked. “This is Richard, the club’s general manager. I’m terribly sorry to disturb you.”
“What happened?”
“Your former husband is insisting that you authorized a jewelry purchase. He’s refusing to provide another payment method.”
I closed my eyes.
“And?”
The manager hesitated.
“Ma’am, he’s also demanding that we release the necklace immediately. He claims you’re attempting to sabotage him.”
I almost laughed.
“Richard, that card is canceled. My company has not authorized any purchase tonight.”
“Understood.”
“And Richard?”
“Yes, ma’am?”
“Please check the membership agreement. I believe my former husband’s guest privileges ended when our divorce became final.”
There was a clicking sound.
Then silence.
“Oh,” he said quietly. “You’re absolutely correct.”
My father raised an eyebrow.
I continued.
“Please make sure the outstanding charges are assigned to the person who ordered them.”
“Of course, Ms. Bell.”
“And please don’t embarrass your staff trying to solve a problem that belongs to my ex-husband.”
Richard thanked me and ended the call.
For the first time that day, I smiled.
But fifteen minutes later, something happened that wiped that smile from my face.
A video appeared on Tessa’s social media.
She was standing inside the Sapphire Suite, shouting at the manager while Landon angrily waved his phone.
“This is ridiculous!” she screamed. “Do you know who he is?”
The manager remained perfectly calm.
“Yes, ma’am. He’s Mr. Pierce, and his payment has been declined.”
Someone nearby laughed.
Landon turned bright red.
Then the manager delivered the sentence that changed everything.
“Furthermore, sir, your access privileges have been terminated. The outstanding charges must be settled before you leave.”
Tessa stared at Landon.
“What do you mean you can’t pay?”
He grabbed her arm.
“Not here.”
She pulled away.
“You told me you were worth millions!”
I watched her expression change as realization slowly replaced arrogance.
Then she said something I wasn’t expecting.
“But Landon, you promised the money would be transferred tomorrow!”
My father immediately sat upright.
“What did she just say?”
I replayed the video.
Tessa’s voice was unmistakable.
“You promised the money would be transferred tomorrow!”
Dad turned pale.
He grabbed his laptop and opened the final document.
“Harper,” he said urgently, “I need you to look at this.”
It was a transfer authorization.
Scheduled for 9:00 a.m. the following morning.
Destination: an offshore account.
Amount: $4.7 million.
My entire body went cold.
“How could he transfer that much money when we’ve already divorced?”
Dad slowly turned the laptop toward me.
“Because someone inside your company approved the transaction using your credentials.”
I stared at the digital signature.
It was mine.
Except I had never signed it.
“Someone forged my authorization?”
Dad nodded grimly.
“And that’s not all.”
He enlarged the authorization record.
Under the section marked Secondary Approval, there was another name.
A name I recognized instantly.
A person I had trusted for more than fifteen years.
My closest friend.
My company’s chief financial officer.
Rebecca Sloan.
I stopped breathing.
Rebecca had hugged me outside the courthouse that morning.
She had promised to help me rebuild my life.
She had even told me how lucky I was to finally escape Landon.
And now her name was sitting beside his on a multimillion-dollar transfer.
My hands began trembling.
“Dad… Rebecca wouldn’t do this.”
He looked at me with unbearable sadness.
“I hoped you’d say that.”
“Why?”
“Because twenty minutes before your divorce hearing, Rebecca called me.”
I stared at him.
“What did she want?”
My father reached into his briefcase and pulled out a sealed envelope.
“She told me that if anything happened to her, I needed to give you this.”
He placed the envelope in my hands.
Across the front, written in Rebecca’s familiar handwriting, were seven words:
“HARPER, LANDON IS NOT THE REAL THREAT.”
And underneath, in smaller letters, was a warning that made my blood run cold.
“DO NOT TRUST THE PERSON WHO TOLD YOU TO CHANGE YOUR PINS.”
I slowly lifted my eyes toward my father.
He was no longer smiling.
And for the first time in my life, I wondered whether the man sitting across from me was protecting me…
Or whether I had just handed him the keys to everything I owned………
